About us
The Feeding OT is a service based in Newcastle, NSW, developed to empower children (6 months - 5 years), their families and their ‘village’ to help reach their feeding and mealtime goals.
Amanda Vickery is the sole Occupational Therapist and has a passion for food, curious feeders, happy mealtimes and reaching for healthy living while nurturing and empowering the important relationship between parent/caregiver and child.
Amanda graduated from the University of Newcastle with a Bachelor of Health Science (Occ. Therapy) in 2001 and has worked in clinical OT and management roles with children and families across a number of services in Sydney, South Australia, the United Kingdom and in her home town of Newcastle, including the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Feeding Clinic.
Amanda’s approach to Occupational Therapy and Feeding can be explained as ‘responsive’ and involves meeting the child and family where they are comfortable and following their lead, empowering them to work toward and reach their goals, whether this be to reduce anxiety around mealtimes, increase food variety, improve enjoyment of different textures, or to develop skills to explore and learn about new foods.
This approach has developed from years of clinical experience and Amanda’s invaluable ‘mum’ experience to her three children (2 with their own feeding challenges) along with key post-graduate learning including: The Get Permission Approach, Marsha Dunn Klein; The Sequential Oral Sensory (S.O.S) Approach to Feeding, Kay Toomey; Division of Responsibility, Ellyn Satter; STEPS+ approach: Supportive Treatment of Eating in Partnership, Katja Rowell & Jenny McGlothlin; Food Chaining; Occupational Performance Coaching; Sensory Processing and Function, Winnie Dunn; DIR/Floortime.
When Amanda is not learning, inspiring or talking feeding, you might find her caravanning and adventuring with her family, exploring the trails running, and of course, enjoying good food!
Amanda looks forward to meeting you and sharing her knowledge and experience to help pave, empower and inspire your journey.
